Dr. Epstein is originally from Atlanta, GA, graduated with honors in microbiology from N.C. State University in 1981, and received his DVM from the University of Georgia in 1985. He came to Gastonia that year to work at Forestbook, and has called it home ever since. He continued his training and became Board-certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP, specialist in Canine and Feline Practice, still the only veterinarian so credentialed in Gaston County) in 1993, and re-certified in 2003 and 2013.
Dr. Epstein is one of Total Bond Veterinary Hospital’s two senior partners and its Medical Director. He counts several interests in veterinary medicine and in addition to the sheer joy of working with pets, their owners, and his team every day, chief among them would be the field of pain management in animals. This has been a focus of continued learning, so much so that he has been additionally Certified by one human and one veterinary organization (American Academy of Pain Management, and as a Certified Veterinary Pain Practitioner, CVPP, by the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management, respectively). Having developed a high level of expertise in this area, he has been called upon to author book chapters and peer-reviewed veterinary journal articles, is a widely sought-after national and international speaker on the recognition, prevention, and treatment of pain in dogs and cats. He has participated in national and international veterinary professional leadership roles, including serving as president of ABVP and IVAPM, and served as a Chairman of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Senior Care Guidelines and Pain Management Guidelines Task Forces.
Local professional accomplishments include assisting in the development of the Veterinary Emergency Clinic of Gaston County, and of the Gaston College Veterinary Technology Program, for which he received the honors of NC Veterinary Medical Association Presidential Award and the University of Georgia Young Achiever Award in 1995, and the Gaston Chamber Small Business Man of the Year in 1996. He has contributed pet-related articles appearing in local publications such as the Gaston Gazette, Gaston Lifestyle Magazine, and others. Other community leaderships include past-president of the Gastonia Jaycees, United Arts Council, Temple Emanuel, and Gaston Dance Theatre. He has served additionally in leadership capacities with the local Chamber of Commerce, Gaston Festivals, United Way FEMA Board, the City of Gastonia Planning Commission, and the Gaston Interfaith Trialogue. He is also currently a proud member of Gastonia East Rotary.
His biggest blessing of all is to be married to Janet, and have children Chris, Jamie, Hannah, and Torrie; a stable of animals over the years fills out the family (dogs, cats, 1 horse, 2 turtles, some fish). Hobbies include soccer, hiking, making this corner of the world a little better through interfaith dialogue, and geneology (including co-authoring a book of family history The Epsteins: Our Illustrated 300-Year Journey from Lithuania to Pennsylvania and Beyond).
