TotalBond Veterinary Hospital at Forestbrook

Senior Pet Care

Our aging furry friends require special attention. Just like people, dogs and cats develop aches and pains as they grow older. While some can be signs of serious conditions, others simply come with the territory of old age. At TotalBond Veterinary Hospital at Forestbrook, our team is deeply experienced at managing the full spectrum of senior pet care needs.

Caring for Senior Pets

From screening for specific age-related diseases or conditions to providing pain management for common issues like arthritis, we have everything you need to ensure your pet stays happy, healthy, and comfortable during the later period of its life.

With that in mind, there are some important ways that the way you care for your pet can and should change as it gets older. For example, we recommend you bring them in twice per year for a regular checkup rather than just once per year. Because pets age so much more quickly than humans, a whole lot can happen within their body in just six months. Twice-annual checkups can help us ensure that we catch any developing issues or conditions early, before they’ve become serious or life-threatening problems.

When you bring in your senior pet for examinations and we discover potential issues, there are several next-steps we can take to help aid in making a diagnosis and developing a treatment plan.

Bloodwork

Blood tests are used to determine how healthy your aging pet is when it comes to their organ functions and other areas of their fitness and health. Blood tests will sometimes be conducted on a before/after basis to see how your pet responds to treatment or changes to diet or behavior.

Urinalysis

Analyzing urine samples is not only used to help diagnose problems, but can be a great way to prevent future issues from popping up. Regular urine tests as part of your senior pet’s check-up schedule can give our vet team a lot of important information, and help us catch infections or diseases when it’s early enough to treat them.

Diagnostic Imaging

Radiology and ultrasound allows us to find out more about your pet than we can in a physical examination. It lets us get high-definition images of the internal organs and systems of your pets body, which can be vital in assessing its health, looking for issues, or determining whether a treatment is effective.
